The Importance of Furnace Filters MERV

The Importance of MERV

What is more important to your home than air quality? Not much! Having clean and uncontaminated air is essential for a healthy life – and a healthy home. So, it goes without saying that clean air is a must. The best way to improve the air in your home? Understand the importance of MERV.

You may be wondering exactly what MERV is. Well, the answer is simple. MERV (which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is an efficiency rating for furnace filters. It is the industry-wide standard rating system that gives each and every filter on the market a rating between 1 and 16. The higher the rating, the more effectively that particular filter is able to trap small airborne particles.

How does this affect the quality of air in your home? The more efficient a furnace filter is, the fewer particles can make their way into your furnace and the associated ducts. This means that there will be less built-up contaminants. When a build-up of dust, dirt, debris, dander, pollen, mold spores, and other contaminants occurs, they can get into your furnace or the air ducts in your home. This allows potentially dangerous particles to be pushed out into the air you breathe. When this happens, there are a number of serious health problems that can crop up. In fact, issues like allergies, asthma, difficulty breathing, respiratory and sinus problems, and even headaches and migraines have often been linked to unclean air in the home.

Clearly, the quality of air in your home cannot be overlooked…and neither can the quality of your furnace filters. To find the right one, you’ll need to consider the MERV rating system. Each filter sold, regardless of the brand or price, has a MERV rating. Since this is industry-wide, that means that a filter with a rating of 10 is consistent between brands. This makes it even easier to find the right MERV rated filter for your furnace.

Filters with a very low MERV rating, between 1 and 4, tend to do very little in terms of actual filtration. They can trap larger particles, but not smaller ones. Filters with a MERV rating between 5 and 8 are slightly better but are not the most efficient on the market. Filters that are rated between 9 and 12 are more efficient as they reduce allergens in the air and are better able to trap smaller particles.

However, the best and more efficient filters have a rating of 13 or more. Filters with a MERV rating of 16, like the Lennox X6672, are the absolute best on the market. This filter not only has the highest MERV rating there is, but it also has a carbon coated fibre matrix – which means that it reduces household odours. Up to 95% of very small airborne particles can be trapped, ensuring that contaminants do not make their way into your furnace or the air that you breathe. Using a furnace filter with a high MERV rating ensures that the most contaminants possible are removed from your air – benefiting the health of your family.

Always think about MERV before you buy. Doing so will allow you to find the best quality filter for your furnace. If you’re ready to focus on improving the cleanliness of air in your home, choose a filter with a higher MERV rating. This will provide more efficient filtration.
