You may be wondering exactly what MERV is. Well, the answer is simple. MERV (which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is an efficiency rating for furnace filters. It is the industry-wide standard rating system that gives each and every filter on the market a rating between 1 and 16. The higher the rating, the more effectively that particular filter is able to trap small airborne particles.

How does this affect the quality of air in your home? The more efficient a furnace filter is, the fewer particles can make their way into your furnace and the associated ducts. This means that there will be less built-up contaminants. When a build-up of dust, dirt, debris, dander, pollen, mold spores, and other contaminants occurs, they can get into your furnace or the air ducts in your home. Filters that are rated between 9 and 12 are more efficient as they reduce allergens in the air and are better able to trap smaller particles.

However, the best and more efficient filters have a rating of 13 or more. Filters with a MERV rating of 16, like the Lennox X6672, are the absolute best on the market. This filter not only has the highest MERV rating there is, but it also has a carbon coated fibre matrix – which means that it reduces household odours. Up to 95% of very small airborne particles can be trapped, ensuring that contaminants do not make their way into your furnace or the air that you breathe. Using a furnace filter with a high MERV rating ensures that the most contaminants possible are removed from your air – benefiting the health of your family.
